OPT for Indian Students: A Game-Changer for Your Career

As an international student in the U.S., after completing your studies, one of the best opportunities to gain work experience is through Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT allows you to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months (or 36 months if you're in a STEM field) in a job related to your degree. This post will explain what OPT is, how to apply, and why it's a valuable opportunity for your career.

What is OPT?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 visa students to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months after graduation in a field related to their degree. If you’re studying a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) subject, you can extend your OPT by 24 more months, giving you a total of 36 months.

Who is Eligible for OPT?

To apply for OPT, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • You must have been an F-1 student in the U.S. for at least one academic year.
  • Your job must be related to your degree program.
  • You must apply for OPT before finishing your degree.

How to Apply for OPT?

Here’s the simple process for applying for OPT:

  1. Get Your I-20 Form
Request your Designated School Official (DSO) to recommend you for OPT by issuing an updated I-20 form.

  2. Apply to USCIS
Submit your application to USCIS using the Form I-765 and pay the application fee. This is the official step where you apply for your work authorization.

  3. Wait for Approval
USCIS will process your application. This can take 2-3 months, so apply early.

  4. Receive Your EAD Card
Once your application is approved, you'll receive your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card, which allows you to begin working.

OPT STEM Extension

If you're studying in a STEM field, you can extend your OPT by an additional 24 months. This gives you a total of 36 months to work in the U.S. under OPT. To qualify for the STEM extension, your employer must be enrolled in the E-Verify program, and you need to apply for the extension before your initial 12 months of OPT expires.

Things to Remember

  1. Unemployment Limit
You can’t stay unemployed for more than 90 days during your OPT period. If you're on the STEM extension, you can be unemployed for up to 150 days.

  2. Report Job Changes
Keep your Designated School Official (DSO) updated about any job changes (employer, role, or location).

  3. Start Your Job on Time
You must begin your job within 90 days of receiving your EAD card.

  4. H-1B Visa Transition
OPT can also be a bridge to an H-1B visa if you want to continue working in the U.S. long-term.

Why OPT is a Great Opportunity

OPT gives you the chance to gain hands-on work experience in the U.S., build your professional network, and improve your career prospects. Whether you want to stay in the U.S. or work for global companies, OPT helps you build the skills employers are looking for.
